HLR Programs
Animal Winter Survival, Feb. 8. If you think winters are tough for your family, then re-think winter from an animal’s point of view. Learn from a Polk County naturalist and feel animal pelts, on Monday, Feb. 8, 2010 at 10 a.m. Location: Urbandale. Register by clicking this link. About ten seats left. Preschoolers welcome.
CPR/First Aid Skills, Feb. 19. Ages 12 and up. Learn techniques for infant, child, and adult choking and CPR. Taught by the City of West Des Moines at their beautiful new teaching facility on Friday, Feb. 19, 2010 from 1 – 3 p.m. Minimum of 5 people. Registration is open now by clicking this link here. This class will (re-)certify you in those areas.
Gyotaku, Mar. 5, ages k – 12. Make a Japanese fish print and learn about its history. Held in partnership with the West Des Moines Home School Assistance Program. Younger kids can stay with parents in the lounge area if needed. Class maximum: 30 kids. Held for one hour on Friday, March 5, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in West Des Moines. Conference News “Homeschool Success”
The conference has the theme “Homeschool Success” and will be held on April 17, 2010 at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in West Des Moines. Admission to the sale will be free; admission to conference workshops will be $15/single or $25/married couple. Registration is open now at the website. We have room for two more volunteer speakers. If you need assistance in an area of your homeschooling, please let our office know and we’ll try to find a speaker.
Sherry Fiscella is confirmed as our main speaker, with the topics of Bloom’s Taxonomy and Confident Reading Teacher.
Bloom’s Taxonomy divides education into three domains, which allow parents to create a more holistic form of education for children.
Confident Reading Teacher will assist teachers of students who are learning to read and/or can already read.
Other confirmed speakers: Maureen Stone (Stone v. State of Iowa) on home school basics and high school/college/PSEO, Sheryl Maxey on home school networking, and Kristie Burns on handiwork and crafts for academics.
2010 Stuff Sale. Saturday, April 17, 2010 from 9 a.m. – noon. Applications to sell at a table are available by request. Retail vendors selling home learning resources from the local area will also be welcome in the sales hall. To suggest vendors or to apply for space as a vendor, contact our office at see3sis@yahoo.com. The HLR Conference will be held in the afternoon at the same site.
